About Us
About Us
CFUW is a non-partisan, voluntary, self-funded organization with 90+ Clubs, located in every province across Canada. Since its founding in 1919, CFUW has been working to improve the status of women, and to promote human rights, public education, social justice, and peace.
CFUW White Rock/Surrey was granted a charter membership in CFUW National on June 18, 1959 when local women came together, under the leadership of founding President Jessie Casselman, to support and advocate on issues that were important to them and their community. Additionally, we are a not-for-profit, nonreporting society under the BC Societies Act governed by a Board of Directors elected by members.
Having celebrated our 65th year milestone, CFUW White Rock/Surrey is an active and engaged group. We promote lifelong learning and camaraderie through our robust program of activities that includes:
- Meetings featuring guest speakers
- Special events
- Committee work
- Ongoing interest groups
A note about our name
The decision was made for the organization to work and be known by the acronym, CFUW rather than our original name , “Canadian Federation of University Women – La fédération canadienne des femmes dîplomées des universités.”
Removing the word “university” aims to be more inclusive and reflects that a university degree is not required to become a member. This update to our brand demonstrates our vision for the future while honouring our rich past.
